The truth about generative engine optimization vs SEO is that GEO is not a replacement for SEO, it is a layer built on top of it: AI answers summarise pages that rank and sources they trust, so SEO is the foundation and GEO is the work of getting named and cited once you are in the pool. Skip the foundation and there is nothing for the AI to pick up.

A lot of people have been told SEO is dead and GEO is the new thing. That is backwards. Every time I have been cited by Google's AI, it has been on the back of pages that already ranked or were built to rank. This page shows what stays the same, what is new, and the extra layer I add on top.

Two Quick Definitions
SEO means ranking pages in Google's classic results. That covers keywords, content, technical health and links.
GEO, generative engine optimization, means getting named, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. The term comes from a 2023 research paper on generative search engines.
Notice what GEO depends on. An AI answer has to come from somewhere. It reads pages, then writes a summary. The pages it reads most are the ones that rank and the sources it already trusts. That is SEO.
Think of It as Floors in a Building
Here is the simplest way I can put it.
- Ground floor: SEO. Your pages are indexed, technically healthy, match real searches and have links pointing at them. They rank.
- First floor: answer-ready content. Your pages answer the question in the first line, use clear headings and include FAQs.
- Top floor: GEO. You give the AI a reason to name you specifically, with your own case studies, mentions across many sites, and speed on new topics.
You cannot build the top floor in mid-air. That is why I never start a GEO project by ignoring rankings.

Generative Engine Optimization vs SEO: What Stays the Same and What Is New
Here is the side-by-side. Most of the SEO column still applies. GEO adds to it.
| Area | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Where you show up | Google's classic results | AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews, AI Mode |
| Keywords | Match what people search | Same, plus match the full questions people ask AI |
| Content | Helpful pages that cover the topic | Same, plus a direct answer up top and your own case studies |
| Technical health | Crawlable, fast, indexed | Same. If it is not indexed, the AI cannot use it |
| Links and authority | Links from other sites | Same, plus mentions across many sites and platforms |
| Speed | Helpful | Very important. Be first within about 24 hours on trends |
| Success measure | Rankings and clicks | Being named and cited, on top of rankings and clicks |
| Quality checks | Accurate, useful content | Same, with Google's 1 October 2026 guidance to fact-check AI-assisted text, metadata, structured data and alt text |
Read the GEO column and count how many rows start with "Same". That is the point of this page. GEO is SEO with a few new habits added.

The New Layer: My Answer Engine Framework
Once the SEO base is in place, I add three habits. I call it the Answer Engine framework.
Be the source
Publish real case studies. Your own tests are facts the AI cannot invent, which is why AI answers quote experts who do public testing. Generic content that says what everyone else says gives the AI no reason to name you.
Be everywhere
Get the same answer onto several sites and platforms, including places like r/AISEOInsider. Each angle points to the same answer. If one site drops, the others stay. In classic SEO one strong page could carry you. In AI answers, more sources naming you means more chances to be picked.
Be first
Publish within about 24 hours on trending topics. Fresh topics have fewer sources, so the first solid page often becomes the one AI leans on.

Proof That SEO Rankings Fed AI Citations
This is not theory. Here is what I have seen in my own results.
- Best AI community. My content ranks number one organically, and the AI Profit Boardroom is also number one in Google's AI with two placements. The organic ranking and the AI placement came together.
- Best GEO expert. Google's AI answer and AI Mode name me first. AI Mode, running Gemini 4 Argon when I checked, listed me number one in "best GEO experts to follow in 2026" and linked to my sites. Perplexity lists me among GEO experts as well.
- Best HARO agency. The AI Overview links to Goldie Agency first.
- Traffic. One site went from zero to 1,300+ clicks a day, with one day showing 9,600+ impressions in Google's AI features.
- Speed. A community article ranked within three days.
In every case the SEO work came first. The AI citations followed the pages that ranked.
How I Build Both at Once with Free Tools
I use a free stack: Hermes Agent (open source), OpenCode as the free brain running DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and Google Search Console. Setup details are in my Agent OS guide.
- Export Search Console data to CSV and give it to Hermes.
- Ask it to analyse what is working and suggest keywords and topics to rank in AI search.
- Read the report: clicks, brand share of clicks, non-brand click-through rate and what is working. For me that was comparison articles, Agent OS clusters, the free AI community, and Antigravity and Hermes topics.
- Pick a keyword, give Hermes an SEO skill (mine is a roughly 100-point quality checklist inside the AI Profit Boardroom) and access to WordPress or Netlify.
- Let it write and publish around your own case studies.
- Check AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity.
Notice step one uses SEO data. The whole GEO process starts from what already ranks. I test the models I use in this loop on Goldie Bench.
For a step-by-step walkthrough, read how to do GEO for a website. For a shorter take on the two acronyms, see GEO vs SEO. And if you want to know what changed from the old blue-links days, read generative engine optimization vs traditional SEO.

Mistakes People Make When Moving From SEO to GEO
- Dropping SEO completely. If your pages stop ranking, the AI has less of your content to read and summarise.
- Publishing generic AI content. If your page says what every other page says, there is no reason for an AI answer to name you. Add your own tests and results.
- Only checking rankings. Search your main questions in AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity as well, and note who gets named.
- Relying on one site. If that site drops, you disappear from the answer. Spread the same answer across several sites and platforms.
- Skipping the fact-check. Review AI-assisted text, metadata, structured data and alt text before you publish.
Fix those five and you are ahead of most of your competitors. If you want a second pair of eyes on your site, book your free strategy call directly.
FAQ
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI answers summarise pages that rank and sources they trust. GEO builds on SEO. Drop SEO and your GEO has nothing to stand on.
What is actually different about GEO?
Three things: you need your own case studies so AI has a reason to name you, you need mentions across several sites, and speed matters more. Success is measured by being named and cited as well as by rankings and clicks.
Should I keep building links?
Yes. Links and authority are still part of how pages rank, and ranking pages are what AI answers draw from.
