The Grok Bot browser is a real web browser running on your Bot's cloud computer, where xAI's Grok Bot opens sites, clicks, types, fills forms and signs in for you. It is not your Chrome or Safari. It lives on a hosted Linux computer that all your Bots share, and it keeps working when your laptop is closed.

Below: what the browser can do, how sign-ins work without the Bot seeing your passwords, how approvals work, and what changed in the latest release.

What the Grok Bot browser is

xAI's docs say your Bots work from a persistent cloud computer with a browser, a command line and a filesystem. Files, sign-ins and browser sessions persist between tasks. Every Bot on your account uses the same computer, so they share the same browser cookies and signed-in sessions.

Each Bot gets its own screen on that computer. That lets several Bots use the browser at once, although one Bot runs one computer-use task at a time. xAI is clear that these screens are separate work surfaces, not separate security boundaries.

You can watch it live. Click the computer preview in the right-hand panel of a chat to see clicks, typing, navigation and status. Since v0.78.1 (27 Oct 2026), the computer view follows the browser tab the Bot brings to the front.

What the Grok Bot browser can do

From xAI's docs and changelog, the browser can:

For bigger browser jobs, the Bot tells you up front that it will take a while (v0.75.2). For a full look at desktop and browser control, read Grok Bot computer use.

Grok Bot browser typing in v0.78.1

The latest changelog entry, v0.78.1 on 27 Oct 2026, changed how the browser fills in sites. xAI's changelog says the Bot's browser types one character at a time and moves the mouse on every website it fills in.

The same release added connector offers on sign-in pages. On Cloudflare, Coinbase, Gusto, YouTube, Railway, Google Ads, Meta Ads and TikTok for Business sign-in pages, the Bot offers that connector. A connector gives the Bot a structured way into the service, which xAI says is more reliable than clicking through a website when one exists.

Two more v0.78.1 fixes matter for the browser. Approved browser actions no longer fail on some Bot computers when the page has not changed. And connect cards for Railway, Square, TradingView and Google Ads appear only on those services' own pages.

How the Grok Bot browser signs in

xAI's docs set a fixed order for sign-ins:

OrderGrok Bot browser sign-in methodDoes the Bot see the secret?
1Vault: a saved login is filled into the pageNo
21Password: you approve each login in 1Password, which fills the Bot's browserNo
3Secure Form: a form in the chat that names the site, such as "Never shown to your Bot. Filled directly to example.com."No
4Handoff: you take over the computer for the one step a form cannot doNo, you type it yourself

Handoffs happen for single sign-on, a passkey, a CAPTCHA it could not get past, an approval on another device or a QR code, a bank card verification, or a site that requires a human. You choose Take over, finish only that step, choose I'm done, and tell the Bot to continue.

Since v0.77.0, when the Bot hands you its computer to sign in to sites like Google, GitHub or QuickBooks, it offers their connector, and connecting ends the handoff.

Never paste passwords or one-time codes into ordinary chat. xAI's docs say so directly. For API keys, use the secure secret card when the Bot asks.

Grok Bot browser logins and sessions

Sign in once, and it sticks. xAI's docs say browser sessions persist, and because the browser is shared, signing in for one Bot makes the session available to your other Bots.

The changelog backs this up across releases. v0.49.0 says the computer keeps its browser sign-ins when it restarts. v0.62.0 says a Bot stays signed in to websites when its computer's browser restarts. v0.77.0 says the browser keeps site logins after its last window closes, and Apple ID sign-in forms fill correctly.

That shared session is also a risk. xAI's guidance:

Grok Bot browser approvals

When a browser action needs approval, the chat shows the proposed action. Allow once lets the Bot continue, Always allow can save a matching rule, and Deny stops it. Since v0.70.2, browser approval cards describe actions in plain words, such as "Open a new tab in Grok Bot's browser".

Auto Review sits behind those prompts. xAI's security docs describe it as an independent review model that checks risky actions, including computer use, before they run. You can add Ask first and Allow automatically rules. Ask first wins when both match.

xAI warns against broad rules such as "allow everything in the browser". Keep rules narrow, like "Ask first before sending any external email". For shopping, read Grok Bot shopping, which covers checkout with saved cards.

Grok Bot browser network: route traffic through your desktop

The Bot's computer reaches the internet through a shared network. xAI's troubleshooting guide says some sites drop connections from it, even when the same address opens on your own device.

The fix is a setting in Settings, then Computer, then Your computer: Route traffic through this computer. The Bot's browser then uses your desktop's connection, so sites see your network and IP address. It applies to new connections, works while the desktop app is open, and only one of your computers can route at a time. An Enterprise admin can lock it off.

The v0.50.0 changelog called this setting "Route egress through this desktop". The current docs call it Route traffic through this computer, so that is the name to look for.

One more network point. Blocking a connector for a team does not block that service's website in the browser. xAI's security FAQ says closing that path takes Network Controls, which is Enterprise only.

Grok Bot browser vs other agent browsers

Grok Bot's browser is hosted for you. Open-source agents like Hermes run a browser you set up yourself. See Hermes Agent browser and Grok Bot vs Hermes. The cloud computer behind the browser runs Linux; read Grok Bot on Linux for that side. For how we test models, see Goldie Bench, and for our full agent system read the Agent OS guide.

Grok Bot browser FAQ

Does the Grok Bot browser see my passwords?

No. xAI's docs say logins from Vault, 1Password and Secure Forms are filled into the page without the Bot seeing them. It can see which logins you saved, so it picks the right one.

Why does the Grok Bot browser type one letter at a time?

The v0.78.1 changelog says the browser now types one character at a time and moves the mouse on every website it fills in. The changelog does not give a reason.

Does the Grok Bot browser stay logged in?

Yes. Sessions persist between tasks and survive browser restarts. Some sites still expire sessions or ask for verification again, and xAI says to have the Bot pause and notify you then.

Can the Grok Bot browser use my home IP?

Yes, with Route traffic through this computer turned on in Settings. It works while the desktop app is open on that machine.
