Using Hermes Agent for accounting means letting Nous Research's open-source agent do the prep work around the books: collecting invoices and expense documents, building reconciliation sheets, running month-end checklists on a schedule and reading payment data, while a person reviews every number and moves every penny. Hermes does not replace your accounting software, and it should never be allowed to send money.

This page gives you copyable setups for each job, the exact Hermes feature behind it, and the point where a human signs off. Nothing here is tax or financial advice. It is a workflow guide for the admin around the books.

What Hermes Agent for accounting can and cannot do

Hermes Agent is an MIT-licensed agent from Nous Research. The Nous docs describe profiles, skills, cron jobs, a messaging gateway, MCP connections, webhooks, memory and approvals. Those parts cover most bookkeeping admin.

What it can do well:

What it cannot do: there is no QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks, Wave or Zoho Books entry in either the Nous-approved MCP catalog or the community plugin catalog at v0.23.0. We checked both listings on GitHub. Your ledger stays in your accounting software, and Hermes prepares the files a person imports or posts.

If you want the full set of setups, prompts and agent templates small teams use for this, the AI Profit Boardroom has them, plus weekly calls where you can ask about your own workflow.

Collecting invoices and expense documents with Hermes Agent

Start with a dedicated profile. The docs say each profile has its own config, .env, memories, skills and cron jobs, so a "books" profile keeps finance access away from your other agents.

A sample setup a two-person bookkeeping firm could use:

  1. Create the profile and connect Google with the google-workspace skill.
  2. Write a short skill called collect-docs: "Search Gmail for messages from the last day with PDF attachments that look like invoices or expense documents. Save each file to the Drive folder Inbox/YYYY-MM. Add one row per file to the Intake sheet: date, sender, file link, amount as printed, currency, due date. Mark any field you cannot read as UNCLEAR."
  3. Schedule it: "Every weekday at 8am, run the collect-docs skill and post the new rows to me on Telegram."

What it produces: a Drive folder sorted by month, an intake sheet with one row per document, and a short morning summary. If your documents live in Dropbox instead, the Nous-approved Dropbox MCP entry is described as "Search, read, and manage files in Dropbox."

Inbound email can also come through the Hermes email gateway. The docs advise a dedicated account and an allowlist, and say unknown senders are ignored when no allowlist is set. For more on that, see Hermes Agent inbox.

Reconciliation prep in Sheets with Hermes Agent for accounting

Reconciliation is where the agent saves the most typing and where review matters most. Hermes prepares, a person decides.

Sample weekly prompt for a cron job:

"Open the Bank Export tab and the Intake tab in the Reconciliation sheet. For each bank line, suggest the intake row that matches on amount and date within three days. Write the suggestion in column F and a confidence note in column G. Never edit the Bank Export tab. List unmatched lines at the bottom."

What it produces: a sheet with suggested matches, notes and a short list of gaps. The bookkeeper checks each match before anything goes near the ledger. Keep the bank export as a file you download yourself. The Plaid entry in the MCP catalog is described as a developer dashboard tool, not a bank feed, so it is not a fit here.

Reading payment data: Stripe, Square and PayPal in Hermes

The v0.23.0 Nous-approved MCP catalog has vendor-hosted entries for Stripe ("Payments, customers, and invoices"), Square ("Catalog, orders, and payments") and PayPal ("Payments, invoices, and subscriptions"). Each uses OAuth through the vendor's own server.

Set them up read-first:

A sample prompt from the Hermes docs for this setup: "Look up the last 10 failed payments and summarize common failure reasons." The Hermes Automation Blueprints docs also show a Stripe webhook that summarises failed payments and flags disputes for an ops channel. That gives you an alert, not an action.

Month-end checklists with Hermes Agent cron jobs

Cron in Hermes takes natural language or cron expressions, can attach skills and delivers results to chat, files or platforms. The security docs say cron_mode defaults to deny, which blocks dangerous commands in scheduled runs. Full setup is in Hermes Agent cron job.

Sample month-end job:

"On the last working day of each month at 9am, run the month-end skill: list intake rows still marked UNCLEAR, unmatched bank lines from the reconciliation sheet, unpaid invoices past their due date, and missing documents from regular suppliers. Post the checklist to the finance Slack channel."

What it produces: one checklist the owner works through. Store client preferences, like "Client A sends statements late," in memory so the checklist gets sharper. The docs cap MEMORY.md at 2,200 characters per profile, so keep notes short.

Client chase emails: the agent drafts, a person sends

Hermes approvals cover dangerous commands and MCP writes. They do not hold outgoing messages for review. So set the rule in the skill: draft only.

The bundled email-inbox-triage skill is described as "Triage an inbox: prioritize threads, draft replies safely." Sample prompt: "Draft a polite reminder for each client missing documents from the month-end checklist. Save as Gmail drafts. Do not send." A person reads and sends each one.

Model choice for cost control in Hermes Agent for accounting

The cron docs say a job's model is resolved in this order: per-job pin, then cron.model, then the main model. Use a small, fast model for the daily document collection and pin a stronger one only to the reconciliation job. Subagents spawned with delegation can use their own model through delegation.model. Julian's own model tests are on Goldie Bench.

Hermes Agent for accounting FAQ

Does Hermes Agent connect to QuickBooks or Xero?

Not through the catalogs. At v0.23.0 there is no QuickBooks, Xero or FreshBooks entry in the Nous-approved MCP catalog or the community plugin catalog. Have Hermes prepare a sheet or file, then import or post it yourself.

Can Hermes Agent pay bills or issue refunds?

It should not. Exclude refund and delete tools, as the Hermes docs show for Stripe, mark payment servers trust: untrusted, and keep YOLO off. Payments stay a human job.

Is Hermes Agent safe for client financial data?

Use a separate profile, allowlists on the email gateway and read-first MCP settings. Community plugins are third-party code, so read each entry before connecting. Nous-approved MCP entries point to vendor-hosted servers.
