Hermes vs Cursor comes down to one question: is the job writing code inside a repository, or running work across your whole business? Cursor is a coding agent and AI editor built around codebases. Hermes Agent, the open-source agent from Nous Research, is a general agent that runs in your terminal, in a desktop app, on Telegram or Slack, and on a schedule. They overlap less than the names suggest, and they work well together.

This page puts them head to head using each project's own documentation, then shows who should pick which and how to run both.

Hermes vs Cursor: what each one actually is

Cursor's documentation opens with a plain line: Cursor is a coding agent for building software. Its Agent lives in the editor side pane, searches your codebase, edits files, runs terminal commands and drives a browser to test changes. For bigger work, a Project lets a coordinator agent plan a feature and hand pieces to other agents.

Cursor has grown past the editor. Cloud Agents run in isolated virtual machines with your repo cloned, so many can run in parallel while your laptop is closed. You can start them from Cursor Desktop, the web at cursor.com/agents, the iOS app, Slack, GitHub, Linear or the API. Automations run those cloud agents on a schedule or when an event fires in GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Linear or a webhook. There is also a Cursor CLI, started with the agent command, with Agent, Plan and Ask modes.

Hermes Agent starts from the other end. It is a personal and team agent that is not tied to a repository. The same agent core powers the CLI, the TUI, the Hermes Desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, a web dashboard, and a messaging gateway that connects Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Email, Teams and more. It schedules its own cron jobs, keeps a bounded memory across sessions, loads skills on demand and delegates work to subagents. The latest release is v0.22.7, a patch release published on 3 November 2026.

Where Cursor is stronger than Hermes

Cursor wins when the work lives in a repository. The editor is the product, so diffs, code review and file navigation sit right where you type. Cursor states that it tunes its agent's instructions and tools for each frontier model it supports. Cloud Agents clone your repos, install dependencies and open pull requests, and they can span several repos at once.

Cursor also ships code-specific agents out of the box. Bugbot reviews pull requests, Security Agents scan for vulnerabilities, and PR Routing and Approval assigns reviewers. If your team lives in GitHub and wants an agent that comments on pull requests, Cursor has that path ready.

Where Hermes is stronger than Cursor

Hermes wins when the work is not only code. A Hermes profile can sit in your team's Telegram or Slack, answer questions, run a research task, write a report to a file and post the result back to the chat. Its cron jobs accept plain language like "every weekday at 8am", can attach skills, and can deliver to the chat where the job was created.

Hermes also gives you more control over where things run and which model runs them. It is open source, runs on hardware you choose, and lets you pin a different model per cron job or per subagent. Profiles give each role its own config, memory, skills and gateway, so a sales assistant and a coding assistant never share state.

Safety is configurable at a fine level. The default smart approval mode lets an auxiliary model clear low-risk commands and escalate the rest. Manual mode asks before any flagged command, and in messaging it queues a pending approval. Deny rules block matching commands even when approvals are turned off.

Hermes vs Cursor: who should pick which

Pick Cursor if most of your day is building and shipping software, you want an editor-first experience, and your team reviews work through pull requests.

Pick Hermes if you want one agent that handles operations, research, content and messaging, runs on a schedule, and reaches you in the chat apps you already use. It also suits anyone who wants an open-source agent and full choice of model provider, including local models.

Pick both if you write code and also run a business. Many founders do both in the same week. That is where the bridge between them matters. For a wider view of how a full agent setup fits together, read the Agent OS guide.

How Hermes and Cursor work together

Hermes reads Cursor's files directly. If a project has a .cursorrules file or rule files in .cursor/rules, and no higher-priority context file such as AGENTS.md, Hermes loads those rules as project context. Your Cursor conventions apply when Hermes works in that folder.

For your global setup, the official agent-importers plugin adds hermes import-agent cursor. It reads your ~/.cursor folder and maps:

Run it with --dry-run first to see the plan before anything is written. The full walkthrough is in our guide to using Hermes Agent with Cursor, and the Hermes import-agent guide covers the other importers.

Hermes can also sit inside an editor. Running hermes acp starts Hermes as an ACP server, so ACP-compatible hosts can show its chat, tool activity, diffs and approval prompts while Hermes keeps its own memory, skills and model setup. Its hook system also treats exit code 2 as a block, matching the Cursor and Claude Code convention, so simple guard scripts carry over.

Hermes and Cursor: two small-business scenarios

These are illustrations of how the tools could be split, not case studies.

Scenario 1: a two-person web studio

A two-person studio builds client sites. The developer could keep Cursor as the daily editor for client code, with Cloud Agents handling small fixes raised from GitHub issues. The studio owner could run a Hermes profile in a shared Telegram group. It would pull a weekly status summary every Friday through a cron job, draft client update emails for approval, and research new leads. Cursor stays on code. Hermes runs the business around the code.

Scenario 2: a solo founder with a SaaS side project

A solo founder could use Cursor for feature work and pull requests, then import those same rules and MCP servers into Hermes with the importer. Hermes could then run overnight jobs that check support email, summarise feedback and post a morning brief to Slack. One set of instructions, two agents, each doing what it is built for.

If you want ready-made versions of setups like these, the AI Profit Boardroom shares them with members every week.

Picking models for Hermes and Cursor

Both tools let you choose frontier models. Cursor lists models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others, alongside its own Composer models. Hermes connects to whatever provider you configure, from an Anthropic key to OpenRouter to a local model. For Julian's own model testing, see Goldie Bench. For model picks inside Hermes, see the best Hermes Agent models.

Hermes vs Cursor FAQ

Is Hermes a replacement for Cursor?

No. Cursor is an editor and coding agent built around repositories. Hermes is a general agent that also writes code. Most people who code daily keep an editor and add Hermes for everything around it.

Can Hermes use my Cursor rules?

Yes. Hermes loads .cursorrules and .cursor/rules files from the working directory when no higher-priority context file exists, and hermes import-agent cursor brings your global rules, MCP servers and skills across.

Does Cursor run scheduled jobs like Hermes cron?

Cursor Automations run cloud agents on a schedule or on events from GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Linear and webhooks. Hermes cron runs on your own setup, can attach skills and delivers results to the chat it came from.

Which is better for a non-technical business owner?

Hermes, through its Desktop app or a Telegram or Slack bot, fits everyday business tasks better. Cursor makes most sense when someone on the team writes code. Want a plan for your setup? Book a free AI strategy session.
