A GEO MCP is an MCP server that gives your AI agent AI-visibility tools. Plug one into Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Hermes or Codex and your agent can check whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand, which competitors they name instead, and which sources they cite. It turns "are we showing up in AI answers?" into something your agent can actually measure for you.

That's useful. But it's also where a lot of people get stuck. They install the tool, stare at a dashboard, and nothing changes. In this guide I'll show you what a GEO MCP is, the main options right now, how to use one with Claude or Hermes, the free way I do it without any MCP at all, and what an MCP simply can't do for you. The full GEO workflow I use, with the Hermes setup and SEO skill, is inside the AI Profit Boardroom.

What a GEO MCP Actually Does
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. An MCP server is a small service that lets an AI agent call tools. Without it, your agent can only talk. With it, your agent can go and do things: query an API, pull data, run a check, write a file.
GEO is generative engine optimization. It's about getting named, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The term comes from a 2023 research paper on generative search engines.
Put the two together and a GEO MCP lets your agent run AI-visibility checks on request. Typical jobs:
- Ask a set of buyer prompts across several AI engines and record whether your brand shows up.
- See which competitors get named when you don't.
- List the sources each engine cites, so you know which pages are feeding the answer.
- Track those results over time so you can see if your work is moving anything.
One thing to be clear on: there's no official, standard GEO MCP. It's a loose label for a growing set of open-source projects and hosted tools that all do roughly the same job in slightly different ways.

GEO MCP Options: Open-Source vs Hosted
Here are the options worth knowing about. Details come from each project's GitHub page or listing, and star counts are approximate at the time of writing. I haven't listed prices, so check each one yourself before you commit.
| Name | Type | What it does | Licence or model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auriti-Labs/geo-optimizer-skill | Open-source | Audit, optimise and track AI citations; per its GitHub it runs as a CLI, Python library, MCP server, GitHub Action or Astro integration (around 1,100 stars) | MIT |
| elmohq/elmo | Open-source | Self-hostable AEO/GEO tracking platform, per its GitHub (around 470 stars) | MIT |
| mcp-geo (DigestSEO) | Open-source | AI visibility MCP; per its listing, each engine is opt-in using your own API keys | Open-source |
| Cite42 | Hosted | MCP for AI visibility plus SEO data, per its listing | Pay per call |
| Finseo, Luce, Apify's SEO and GEO MCP | Hosted | Hosted AI visibility and SEO tooling you connect to your agent | Commercial |
The simple rule: open-source if you're happy to set things up and bring your own API keys, hosted if you want it to just work and don't mind paying. Either way, the output is the same kind of thing. A picture of where you show up and where you don't.

How to Use a GEO MCP With Claude or Hermes
The setup is roughly the same whichever agent you use.
1. Pick one tool and install it
Follow the README for whichever option you chose. Most open-source ones need you to add API keys for the engines you want to check. Start with two or three engines, not all of them.
2. Connect it to your agent
Claude Code, Claude desktop, Cursor and Hermes all support MCP servers. The easiest way is to ask your agent to connect it for you. Paste the README into the chat and say "connect this MCP server and confirm it's working". If you run Hermes, my guide to the Hermes MCP server setup walks through it.
3. Give it real buyer prompts
Don't test "what is my brand". Test what buyers type: "best SEO agency for law firms", "best AI community", "who is the best GEO expert". Ask your agent to run 10-20 of these and record mentions, competitors and cited sources in a simple table.
4. Turn the results into a to-do list
This is the step that matters. Ask the agent: "Which cited sources could we get onto? Which prompts have no good answer yet that we could write one for?" Now you've got work to do, not just a report.
If you want help reading those results, book your free GEO strategy session and we'll go through them with you.
If you want the whole agent workflow, including skills and checklists, it's taught inside the AI Profit Boardroom ($69/mo). If you're doing all this with Claude, my guide to Claude GEO SEO shows the full workflow from data to published page.
The Free Alternative: No MCP Needed
Here's what I actually do. I don't use a GEO MCP at all for most of it.
My stack is free. Hermes Agent, which is free and open source. OpenCode as the brain, running DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, which is free in OpenCode. And Google Search Console, which is free.
The process:
- Export your Search Console data to a CSV.
- Give the CSV to Hermes.
- Ask it to analyse what's working and suggest keywords and topics to rank in AI search.
- Hermes builds a report: clicks, brand share of clicks, non-brand click-through rate, and what's working. For me that was comparison articles, Agent OS clusters, the free AI community and Antigravity/Hermes topics.
- Pick a keyword, give Hermes an SEO skill and access to WordPress or Netlify, and let it write and publish.
- Check AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity.
That's it. Search Console already tells you what Google is showing you for, and Google's AI features pull a lot from pages that already rank. You don't need a paid visibility tool to find your next move. If you'd like to see the full Agent OS setup I run this on, read the Agent OS guide.
And if you'd rather start with a quick check of where you stand, try the free GEO audit method. It takes about an hour, no tools needed.

What a GEO MCP Can't Do
A GEO MCP measures. That's the job. It doesn't make AI engines recommend you.
Old SEO was one of 10 blue links. You could rank number seven and still get clicks. AI answers are a short list of one to three names. There's no room for number seven. So knowing you're not in the list is only step one. Getting into it is the real work, and that comes down to two things.
Case-study content
Google updated its guidance on 1 October 2026. It's critical to fact-check and review AI-assisted content before you publish it: the text, the metadata, the structured data, the image alt text. Your own tests and results are facts an AI can't invent. That's why AI answers quote experts who do public testing.
Here's what that looks like for me. When you search "best GEO expert", Google's AI answer and AI Mode name me first. AI Mode's list of the best GEO experts to follow in 2026 has me at number one and links to my sites. Perplexity lists me among GEO experts too. One of my sites went from zero to more than 1,300 clicks a day. None of that came from a dashboard. It came from publishing real case studies, fast, in lots of places.
Links on the sources AI cites
Your GEO MCP will show you which pages get cited. Those pages are your shortlist. Get mentioned and linked on them, and build your own authority with links, and you give the engines more reasons to name you. A tracker can't do that part for you.
For a library of prompts you can use to write that content with your agent, grab my free ChatGPT prompts. And if you want my link-building playbook, get the free link-building book.

FAQ
Is there an official GEO MCP?
No. There's no official, standard GEO MCP. It's a general name for MCP servers that check AI visibility. Options include open-source projects like Auriti-Labs/geo-optimizer-skill, elmohq/elmo and mcp-geo, plus hosted tools like Cite42, Finseo, Luce and Apify's SEO and GEO MCP.
Do I need a GEO MCP to do GEO?
No. You can do it for free by exporting your Search Console data to CSV, giving it to Hermes Agent, and asking it to find what's working and suggest keywords for AI search. A GEO MCP adds tracking across engines, which is nice to have but not required.
Which agents work with a GEO MCP?
Any agent that supports MCP servers. That includes Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Hermes and Codex. The easiest way to connect one is to paste the README into your agent and ask it to set it up.
Will a GEO MCP get me cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI?
Not on its own. It shows you where you appear and which sources get cited. Getting cited takes case-study content, being on the sites AI already trusts, and links. If you want a plan for that, book a free SEO strategy session or get your free GEO game plan and we'll show you where to start. Or learn the full system inside the AI Profit Boardroom.
A GEO MCP is a measuring tool, so use it to find the gaps, then fill them with real case studies and links.
