Grok Bot vs ChatGPT agent: what changed
OpenAI launched ChatGPT agent on 17 July 2025. The launch post says it combined Operator's website actions with deep research, and ran on "its own virtual computer" with a visual browser, a text browser, a terminal and connectors like Gmail and GitHub. You started it from the tools menu or by typing /agent.
Today that launch post carries a banner saying it is outdated. The help center article says to use ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step tasks and finished deliverables, and the cloud browser for supported browser workflows. It also says Operator is folded in and the Operator website is no longer accessible.
So if you searched for ChatGPT agent, the tool you can actually use from OpenAI today is ChatGPT Work. The rest of this page compares Grok Bot with it.

What Grok Bot does well vs ChatGPT Work
Grok Bot is built around persistent workers. xAI's docs describe Bots as AI teammates "with names, jobs, and context that compounds over time."
- One shared cloud computer. All your Bots use the same persistent cloud computer with a browser, filesystem and terminal. They share its files, browser sessions and logins, and each Bot gets its own screen on it.
- Bots coordinate. Bots run in parallel, message each other, share group chats and hand off tasks.
- Skills and routines. Save a process as a skill, or teach a browser workflow by demonstration. Routines run on a schedule or on events: Slack, GitHub, Linear, Sentry, PagerDuty, email or a webhook.
- Its own inbox. Bots can claim an address at mail.grokbot.com, and a routine can run when email arrives.
- Reach. Desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux, plus iPhone and Android. You can also use X Chat, tag @bot on X, or add a shared Bot to Slack.
Grok Bot has no model picker; it routes each task itself. Logins go through Vault, a password manager or a Secure Form without the Bot seeing the values. For the browser side, see Grok Bot browser.

What ChatGPT Work does well vs Grok Bot
OpenAI's help center describes Work as "an agent designed for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables." Here is what the docs say it covers:
- Finished deliverables. Research a topic, analyze information, or create a document, spreadsheet, presentation, report or Site.
- Cloud plus local. Work on web and mobile runs in the cloud. In the ChatGPT desktop app, Work can also use local files and desktop apps with your permission.
- Cloud browser. Work gets its own browser on a separate computer in the cloud. It keeps going after you close your computer and pauses for sign-in or confirmation.
- Schedules and triggers. Work can run once, repeat, or run on a trigger through Scheduled Tasks. Event triggers include new Gmail messages, new Slack channel messages and GitHub pull request activity.
- Projects and models. Projects keep chats, files and instructions together, and Work has a model picker.
- Voice. Live voice works with Work on web, iOS and Android, and in the desktop app.
On safety, OpenAI says the cloud browser asks before visiting a new website by default, uses a secure sign-in form the model cannot see, and asks for confirmation before consequential actions like a booking or a payment. OpenAI's business-team agents are covered in ChatGPT workspace agents.

Where Grok Bot and ChatGPT Work really differ
Workers versus chats
Grok Bot asks you to set up a Bot with a job, like the sales outbound or paid media roles on xAI's use-case page. The Bot keeps that role. ChatGPT Work starts from a chat or a project: you describe an outcome and review the result.
Shared computer versus separate browser
Grok Bot's computer belongs to your account, and every Bot on it can use its logins. xAI's FAQ says not to treat separate Bots as a security boundary. OpenAI says its cloud browser keeps its own cookies and sessions, separate from your personal browser.
Triggers
Both react to events. Grok Bot lists more trigger sources, including Linear, Sentry, PagerDuty and webhooks. Work covers Gmail, Slack and GitHub pull requests.
Deliverables
Work's help article names the formats outright: documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and Sites. If the end product is a file to hand a client, Work is the more direct route.
Who should pick Grok Bot vs ChatGPT agent's replacement
Pick Grok Bot if:

- You live on X or Slack and want to hand off tasks from there.
Pick ChatGPT Work if:
- Your output is reports, decks, spreadsheets or a simple Site.
- You already pay for ChatGPT and want to choose the model.
- You want local files on your desktop in the loop.

Grok Bot vs ChatGPT Work: small business examples
These are illustrations of how each tool's documented features map to common jobs. They are not customer stories.
A three-person agency that wants one worker researching leads and another watching ad spend would lean toward Grok Bot. The xAI use-case page describes both roles, and each starter prompt ends at a review point before anything is sent.
A bookkeeper who needs a monthly client report and a summary deck would lean toward ChatGPT Work, which names spreadsheets, reports and presentations as its outputs and can open local files in the desktop app.
A local service business that wants a draft reply every time a booking email lands could use either. Grok Bot routines can start from email, and Work can trigger on new Gmail messages.
