OpenClaw Aion UI: Free Multi-Agent Dashboard

OpenClaw plus Aion UI is the free upgrade that finally turns OpenClaw into a real multi-agent dashboard. After running this combination for a few weeks, I'm convinced it's the right setup for anyone managing more than one AI agent in their stack.

OpenClaw on its own is powerful, but controlling it through the terminal is messy. You lose track of agents, can't easily see what's running, and can't quickly switch between conversations. Aion UI fixes all of that and adds genuine multi-CLI support on top, so this post is the full walkthrough.

What Aion UI Is

Aion UI is a free, open-source desktop dashboard for AI agents that's not just for OpenClaw. It works with OpenClaw, Hermes, Open Code, Kim CLI, Codex, Quen, Claude, Gemini, Aon CLI, and Nanobot.

That breadth is the unique value. You manage your entire AI agent stack in one app rather than juggling multiple terminal windows and config files.

Why You'd Use It With OpenClaw

OpenClaw's default interface is the browser gateway or terminal, and both have real limits. It's hard to see all conversations at once, hard to manage scheduled tasks reliably, hard to compare agents side by side, and there's no phone access at all.

Aion UI gives you a clean dashboard with all agents visible, the ability to switch between conversations instantly, history and scheduled tasks at a glance, phone access so you can control agents from your pocket, voice input for hands-free use, and multi-agent parallel mode. For serious OpenClaw users, this is night-and-day better than the gateway.

Setup Steps

Five steps to get Aion UI wrapped around your existing OpenClaw setup.

Step one is downloading Aion UI from their site — pick the build for your OS (Mac/Windows/Linux) and install. Step two is making sure OpenClaw is running, because Aion UI is a UI on top of OpenClaw and needs OpenClaw running first. If you don't have OpenClaw set up yet, follow Build Your Own OpenClaw.

Step three is opening Aion UI. Launch the app and it auto-detects OpenClaw. If it doesn't, check that the OpenClaw gateway is up. Step four is switching to OpenClaw Gateway view by pointing Aion UI at your OpenClaw config in settings. Now Aion UI is your front-end. Step five is adding models — Aion UI has its own model management, so add your providers (Anthropic, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, local Ollama) and switch between them per agent.

Multi-Agent Teamwork

This is where Aion UI really shines.

You can have OpenClaw running one task, Claude Code running another task, and Hermes handling another job — all in parallel and all in one dashboard. Each agent works on different tasks simultaneously without you needing to manage separate terminal windows. The pattern matches what I run for Hermes Agent Swarm but applied to multiple CLIs at once.

Scheduled Tasks (Better Than The Gateway)

Aion UI has a clean scheduled tasks panel showing total tasks, active, paused, and failed at a glance. Compare that to the gateway where the schedules page sometimes refused to load.

Reliable scheduled tasks unlock real automation, and this is one of the biggest practical wins of switching to Aion UI. I cover scheduled task patterns in OpenClaw Byterover.

Phone Access

This is the killer feature for me.

You can control your agents from your phone by setting up the remote section in Aion UI's settings. Once configured, you can trigger agent tasks from your phone, check on running tasks, switch between chats, and approve agent actions while you're away from your desk. If you've connected channels like WhatsApp or Telegram, this layers on top of the existing channel integration.

Skills Marketplace

Aion UI has its own skills marketplace where you can browse, upload, and import skills. The skills work across the connected agents (OpenClaw, Hermes, etc), which is broader than ClawX which is OpenClaw-only.

If you only run OpenClaw, ClawX OpenClaw might still be the better front-end. If you run multiple CLIs, Aion UI wins on this dimension alone.

Voice Input

Voice input is supported, so you can speak your prompt instead of typing it. It's genuinely useful for hands-free workflows where you're walking around or doing other work and want to throw a quick prompt at an agent.

Teams And Capabilities

Aion UI supports team mode where you set a team leader (OpenClaw or Claude Code), build a team of agents, and they collaborate on tasks. There's also a capabilities section where you upload skills, add new ones, and import them across the team.

Aion UI Vs ClawX For OpenClaw

Quick comparison between the two leading OpenClaw front-ends.

Aion UI is free, supports multi-CLI (OpenClaw, Hermes, Claude Code, etc), has phone access, supports voice input, and is open source. ClawX is also free, but OpenClaw-only, with a native desktop app feel, active development, and open source roots.

If you only run OpenClaw, pick ClawX. If you run multiple agents across different CLIs, pick Aion UI.

What's Missing

Honest about the rough edges.

Documentation is thin. Some setups can be a bit buggy on first install. The desktop pet is a polarising feature — some users love it, some find it distracting. For most users, none of these are dealbreakers.

Common Setup Issues

Three issues that trip people up most often.

The first is "connection error" when launching. Make sure OpenClaw gateway is up first because Aion UI is a wrapper — without OpenClaw, there's nothing to wrap. The second is wrong API showing on agents. Check the agent settings, because sometimes Aion UI assumes the wrong default model and you need to switch in the agent's individual settings. The third is scheduled tasks not appearing. If you're connected to OpenClaw correctly, scheduled tasks pull through automatically; check OpenClaw side first.

Daily Reality

A typical day running Aion UI looks like this. I open Aion UI and see all my agents in the sidebar. I pick one and start a chat, watching tool calls happen inline. I switch to another agent for a different task. I schedule overnight runs. I check progress from my phone in the evening.
